Successful Online Interview: Mission Possible
How to succeed in an online Interview
In today's dynamic and technologically advanced world, online interviews have established themselves as an indispensable part of the recruitment process. Whether you're applying for a remote or in-person position, it's increasingly common for interviews, or at least the initial stage, to take place online. Many candidates see this approach as an advantage, thanks to the comfort it brings, as well as the fact that it allows them to feel an idea more relaxed. However, these interviews hide their own challenges that require special preparation and approach. To be successful and make an impression that will land you your dream job, all you have to do is follow a few simple steps. To begin with, the things without which an online interview cannot be conducted are technique, a good environment and proper body language. Still, don't think you have to be some sort of video content expert to perform well. Like any job interview, your personal characteristics, experience and the way you present yourself are of utmost importance.
Technical Preparation
To ensure that everything runs smoothly during your interview, you will need the following:
A stable internet connection, a desktop computer/laptop/tablet or smartphone, headphones (optional), a microphone, and a video platform such as Teams, Zoom, Skype, or others. We recommend conducting a test call with a friend before the interview to check if everything is working properly. This way, you can replace any broken headphones or find a better setup in your living space in advance.
To achieve the best video quality, find a well-lit location where the light is coming from the front (without a window behind you) and a neutral, friendly background. To ensure a smooth conversation, try to minimize any background noise that might disrupt communication during the interview.
One of the most important aspects is that the interviewer can see your face clearly. If you are using a desktop computer or laptop, make sure the camera is at eye level. If you are using a tablet or smartphone, ensure that you hold the device as steady as possible in front of you. We recommend using a stand, if available, to keep your hands free.
Personal Preparation
Although the interview is online, the dress code should not be overlooked. Choose appropriate clothing, as your first impression begins with what you wear. Make sure to research the company you are applying to beforehand. Basic knowledge such as the industry in which the company operates, the causes it supports, and its presence on social media can give you an edge over other candidates.
Consider your strongest attributes that can aid in your professional journey and prepare responses to various questions that may be asked during the interview.
During the Interview
During the interview, adopt a comfortable and natural posture, maintain an upright stance, keep your shoulders relaxed, and look at the camera when speaking. One of the advantages of an online interview is the familiar environment you are in, which should contribute to your comfort.
Listen carefully to the interviewer and avoid interrupting. Take 2-3 seconds to think about the question before responding to ensure the accuracy and relevance of your answer.
As with any interview, your qualifications, experience, and the way you present yourself in the best light are crucial factors, so aim to do just that.
In conclusion, successfully navigating an online interview requires careful preparation and attention to detail. With proper technical setup, a well-chosen environment, and confidence in your own skills, you can make a strong impression and stand out among other candidates. Follow these simple steps and ensure that your performance is top-notch, regardless of the physical distance.
Good luck in your search for the perfect job!
